Amplified Telephones and Portable Amplifiers
Amplified Telephones

Amplified telephones can amplify incoming conversation anywhere from 25-75 dB. They also typically come with standard features as on regular telephones including memory storage and redial.  Cordless amplified phones are also available.

  Portable Amplifiers and In-Line Amplifiers

Portable amplifiers have an adjustable strap so they easily fit onto any phone. These are great for frequent travelers.

In-line amplifiers attach to your existing phone and amplify the incoming calls up to 40 dB.

TTYs

Teletypewriters (or TTYs) offer the deaf and hard of hearing an alternate way of communicating by typing messages to be sent either to another TTY or through an operator to a hearing person.

TV Amplifiers

One of the best personal amplifiers for television is the wireless infrared system. The transmitter which sits on the TV converts sound into an invisible beam of light (infrared). The headset you wear then receives this infrared signal and converts it back into sound and sends it to your ears. One great feature of this system is that it only amplifies what is being said on television, not the dishwasher in the other room or the rustling newspaper from your spouse. People with normal hearing or hearing loss can also use infrared systems to watch TV late at night. You can turn the television volume to a very low level and then turn up your headset to a comfortable level. You don't disturb your neighbors and you can easily follow your favorite program.

Alerting System

Alerting ALDs can detect sounds that a hearing impaired person might otherwise miss. These devices can usually be easily attached to the telephone, doorbell or alarm clock so that a light flashes, a fan turns on or a vibrator is activated. Sometimes the sound is simply amplified for detection.
